Frequently Asked Questions

How do I take care of my flowers?

Many people are frustrated at the longevity of fresh cut flowers once they bring them home, but remember they are still living entities that can be encouraged to last longer with proper care. Follow the tips below to help extend your flower's life.

  1. Replenish the water frequently and change the water every 2-3 days. Flowers drink a lot of water! It is important to clean out the vessel your flowers are in as flowers are susceptible to bacteria growth as the stems sit in water. *Wash your vessel with soap and water once you have thrown away your flowers.

  2. Trim your flowers every time you put them in new water. The stems of flowers dry out, so when you cut them again you expose new cells that can efficiently drink up more water.

  3. Keep your flowers away from heat and direct sunlight. Sun and heat will encourage your flowers to "mature" which ultimately leads to a shorter vase life. In addition to heat and light, keeping your flowers away from fruit will protect them from ethylene gas. This is the hormone in plants that induces the flower to drop its petals and become a fruit. While this is harmless to humans, it is harmful to your blooms.

  4. Use the "flower food" packets for most flowers to "feed the flowers" as well as keep the water fresh as it contains a bactericide designed for this purpose. You only need to use half of the package every time you change the water.

  5. Use sharp scissors when trimming your flowers as to not damage the cells of the stem. Damaged cells from dull scissors have a harder time drinking up the water than healthy cells produced from a clean cut.
